Ubuntu mate 16.10 gtk+3

I read that ubuntu mate 16.10 is compiled from gtk+3; can I use old gtk2 themes? Is it back compatible?

No. A GTK 2 theme will keep working for GTK 2 apps, but for GTK 3 apps, including MATE in 16.10, you need a theme that supports GTK 3 (GTK 3.20 specifically).

The os can’t be compiled againts gtk3 but Mate is gonna come in gtk3 . Gtk2 Themes work for Gtk2 only and Gtk3 themes work with gtk3 . If your theme supplies gtk3 variant it will work in Gtk3 version of mate . If not mate will use a fallback theme for desktop and for GTK3 apps . Decorations work the same for both versions .
