Ubuntu mate 24.04: screen resolution fixed to 1024x768 with last kernel update

Hi,
I have a very strange report
I have tried the following distributions with a combination of kernel and desktop environment and they all work. So, with high probability, it is something related to ubuntu (and consequently mate):

  • Debian 12.11 with kernel 6.1.x and mate desktop: it works.
  • Debian 13 daily build with kernel 6.12.x and mate desktop: it works.
  • Fedora 42 workstation with kernel 6.14.x and gnome desktop: it works.
  • Ubuntu 25.04 with kernel 6.14.x and gnome desktop: it does not works.
  • Ubuntu 24.04 server with kernel 6.8.x and 6.11.x: it does not works (only up to kernel 6.8.11).

[EDIT]Ah, yeah, it might be Ubuntu specific, but also might have been broken in kernel 6.9-6.11.[/EDIT]

Actually even the 6.14.x kernel I tried with ubuntu 25.04 doesn't work. If you want I can try it with ubuntu 25.10 daily build. What can I do? Report the problem to ubuntu launchpad?

You have found out that Debian and Fedora work as intended and Ubuntu misbehaves. So far, so good.
Provided that you run your Linux within virtual machine I'd suggest to verify compatibility of Ubuntu and your hypervisor. (Namely, virtual video subsystem/driver) That can be accomplished by loading your PC in trial mode from Ubuntu live CD/flash and verifying how it behaves on the real hardware.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, this is the only way that I found to use GNU/linux on my PC since its SoC is not supported. At the moment even virtualbox does not working due to missing arm64 support.

Definitely report it if you haven't already.
