First impressions… (I’ve done a full install of the latest version onto a laptop)…
Some very minor things…grub looks professional until you select an option, then most of grub disappears. Not really a problem though, and boot up time is then very fast
Whats the point of auto login? This option still requires you to click to log in, so it’s not really auto.
Had a few issues installing software. When I searched “opera” and “F-spot” I was told these weren’t in the repos. I was able to get opera via the opera website. Has F-spot been removed by Ubuntu, or does this mean my software sources are incorrect?
I’m not very experienced with linux so royally messed up after install! I did all the updates, then merrily continued installing and downloading other things. I wasted hours, as the system never booted again!
Common sense tells me you should always reboot straight after updates - so I will just put that down to experience!
But these are very small quibbles. Overall, I’m delighted with this distro. When Unity came out, my family all hated it, and we ended up getting a new PC and going back to windows. I’ve been using pen drive linux on and off ever since.
I happened to see news about this distro on twitter…and it made me remember how much I liked the old “wobbly windows” Ubuntu. I’ve installed to an old laptop (thought it best to avoid resource heavy desktops) and the results are stunning. I’m delighted.
I don’t want to mess anything up, so I’m not going to follow the threads about getting wobbly windows. But I would like them! For future editions (and to make this more appealing to the general or curious user) I’d like to request that the “mate tweak” options are extended, with more control to the user for compiz features such as wobbly windows.
I’ve tried out lots of distros via USB before settling on Ubuntu Mate as my first hardrive install since 2009! This one is simply the coolest! It’s got character. And it can do everything. Latest games via steam? Worked a dream. So this is very much an OS for now…it’s practical and productive. I tried this out expecting a fun bit of nostalgia. What I’ve got now is a superb laptop that I’ve never previously enjoyed
A big “thankyou” to the developers
