Uninstalling Gnome Packages (Ubuntu 16.04)

Hi everyone, so happy I found MATE after I’d been using “gnome-flashback” and metacity for way too long.

I’m wondering if anyone can give guidance - I want to uninstall as many gnome packages as possible in Ubuntu 16.04LTS. I have no need for gnome-flashback/compiz/metacity/etc.

Reason I ask is because I had an issue of two unlock screens coming up after my screensaver. Turns out I had to uninstall the gnome-screensaver package… so it must have been running.

So maybe there’s other gnome stuff running too that I don’t need.

Any suggestions/scripts for purging anything not needed by MATE?

Thanks!!

On my 16.04 LTS system (previously 12.04 LTS -> 14.04 LTS with Unity and later GNOME FlashBack) I have un-installed the following packages:

sudo apt-get purge software-center activity-log-manager alacarte metacity \
evince evince-common webbrowser-app gnome-screensaver gedit gedit-common eog \
baobab file-roller gnome-control-center gnome-control-center-data \
nautilus totem rhythmbox gnome-terminal gnome-system-tools gnome-system-monitor \
gnome-system-log gnome-sudoku gnome-settings-daemon gnome-session-common \
gnome-screenshot gnome-power-manager gnome-online-accounts gnome-mines \
gnome-mahjongg gnome-font-viewer gnome-calendar gnome-panel \
aisleriot gnome-session-bin gnome-session-canberra gnome-terminal-data \
gnome-user-guide

sudo apt-get autoremove

Hope it helps.

I think it would better to fresh install Ubuntu MATE 16.04/18.04 instead of purging all gnome files.

Yes and no.
It depends on how many applications and dot-files in home-folder user have. On modern hardware with fast internet any Ubuntu may be installed in 20 minutes, but time for configuration may be even longer.

On my system I do not have any side-effects with un-installation command above. Ran it on 3 machines some time ago.
