Upgrade to 17.10 issues and questions (DNS, Brisk, login screen)

Yesterday I’ve updated my system to 17.10 release and I had some issues that I want to share in here

  1. DNS issue, can not load any page
The problem was with /etc/resolv.conf . For some reason system was setting up nameserver value to 127.0.1.1. This is not the first time this happen. I saw exactly the same problem when I was upgrading from Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04 (not Mate). Back then upgrade on Mate flavour went fine. resolv.conf file is generated from Network Manager, but even when I had Google DNSes set up in the manager it didn’t affected resolv.conf. The solution was to run
    dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf
This regenerated resolv.conf file and set up nameserver to 127.0.0.58 (?) and it fixed the problem.
Can any one explain me what just happen and why 127.0.0.58 works?

  2. Brisk menu:
If I understood correctly Martin explanations on various podcasts and in release note Brisk menu is now default menu in Mate. Why I can not see it after upgrade? I still have the old version and brisk menu seems to be missing from system

  3. Login screen
After upgrade user name and password window is not in the center of the screen. Is this bug or a feature?

  1. Not sure about this. On my PC, it’s set to 127.0.0.53.

  2. If you upgraded, you keep your old layout. Brisk menu should be available in the applets, though. It doesn’t appear in the list of applets?

  3. I think it’s a feature, a new design for the Ubuntu MATE LightDM screen.

Search for “Slick Greeter” in the release announcement…

For Brisk, either add it to your panel as @terzag suggested, or switch to a new layout in MATE Tweak, such as Munity (like Unity) or Contemporary.
