Upgrading to 18.04 using Software updater

Using 16.04 Now. Updater said that I can upgrade to 18.04 as of several days ago.
Has anyone done this yet?
Does it transfer all of the apps or do I need to reinstall them?
Is this the time to move my Home file to a separate partition?
I have a dual boot system (UM16.4/SOLIS). Will I have options to keep it or clean if off?
and lastly are there exits before I start the actual update in case I get cold feet?
Had a horrible experience with 17.10 but Home folder is backed up.

I have an identical computer with UM18.04LTS now and am ready to upgrade this one
Thanks

I would always recommend doing a fresh install instead of upgrading. In my personal experience, upgrading usually breaks something. Other opinions are available.

Thanks. That was my initial thought also but if I break it , my Home folder is up to date on another drive. I don’t mind being the "Tip of the spear"since I have the same machine on 18.04 already. I’ll move the home folder over there first and make sure that goes well and then take the plunge. I’ll report back here with the results.

Was hoping someone else entered the dark cave before me. LOL

I’ve performed a successful upgrade from Ubuntu MATE 17.10 to 18.04 (18th of May, 2018) on my main PC. Upgrade went smooth, everything was working as expected after the upgrade.

Upgrades from 16.04.01 to 16.10, from 16.10 to 17.04, from 17.04 to 17.10 ended up in a re-installation of the OS from scratch (no, none of these upgrades were a disaster, but there were some glitches and annoyances).

Looking forward to upgrade from Ubuntu MATE 18.04 to 18.04.01 (if there will be one available). If something goes wrong, I will report in this forum.

I upgraded my home machine before the official release, some time after the final beta. I didn’t have any issues, unlike when I upgraded from it 17.04 to 17.10, which did give me some trouble. As has been said, YMMV.

Strange.. officially it should be the 26 of july for main Ubuntu.
My updater still do not tell me to upgrade to 18.04 LTS which should be the 18.04.1

LOL. You are right. Do a fresh install, I’ve been at it for 6 hrs now. and I’m still not finished.

Do a fresh install with a USB stick. It’s a good time to get rid of little used apps.
It was successful …sort of
But there were a lot of surprises.
Here are a few of the problems I encountered;

  • There are three times when the install pauses and asks for a decision about replacing config files So it’s not “set it and forget it”

  • It disables all of your “other software” "ppa"s and it’s not obvious what repository belongs to what app

  • The welcome software “ubuntu-mate-welcome” was MIA. Didn’t download. Had to find it and reinstall. There are some surprises there also I had to use “sudo snap install ubuntu-mate-welcome --classic” but there were warnings about security risks. Didn’t care - I needed it.

  • The desktop configuration was pretty much intact. The background color changed. meh. easy fix.

  • Five or six apps disappeared anyway. I used “software boutique” to reinstall them again. I fact, I used the reinstall option to redo all of them. Most just reinstalled quickly but some had to do a complete download.

  • After the install, it didn’t restart as noted on the gui so I did an apt-upgrade but it only offered a “partial”

All-in-all , I gained experience and I’m retired anyway.
The duel boot still worked. It didn’t touch that.
Still not done.
Going to bed. A single malt scotch sounds good
