Try changing the window manager in MATE Tweak:

That sounds like compositing is off. go to system/preferences/look and feel/mate tweak click on the "windows" tab on the left hand side change window manager to "marco(compton GPU compositor)" on the right hand side [image] close Mate Tweak. Reopen firefox and go to a streaming video site and run a video. you should find screen tearing is gone

hi all unfortunately tearing was back since 16.04.2 (mate 1.16), whatever the windowmanager/compositor I use. I definitely fixed it thanks to this link: good luck
