When I right click the trash can and select Open Trash, then VLC opens?
How can I fix that?
Put a trash icon on your desktop. Then right click and click on 'open with other application'.
Make sure 'Remember this application for 'application/x-caja-link type files' is checked.
Then scroll down to caja and click open. Now caja will open trash.
I have had this happen twice, once with Audacious when I clicked on a song it opened caja. The other time with engrampa it opened a drawing program not a compressed file. That is how I fixed it both times.

Glad to help. I never figured out what crossed the link type files up. I don't think I did it accidentally, but it could easily happen.
