None of the 3 built-in menus are working for me. It’s hard to find programs like this specific to MATE. Do you guys have some favorite menus?
Right now, the one I like the best is the menu that the Redmond layout gives you. I’d like to be able to activate it with the super key though. Plus, I’d like to be able to use an image for the button. I also dig Xubuntu’s default menu. Though I’d really like a menu that works like Classic Shell.
Do you guys know of a menu program that you think would suit me?
The “Redmond” menu is the nearest to "classic shell, I would say.
Though, you would probably need to go into the menu editor and add/remove some of the sub-menus manually to get it to an even closer match. Then, finally, perhaps install a “Windows” theme.
Just for your entertainment, this is how “windowsy” you can make UM. if you really want to go down the rabbit hole…
Heh. I like. I’m doing this for a friend though, and he wants it “windowsxpy.” I have it pretty much configured to be the Windows XP equivalent of that. He’d like another menu though. Classic Shell has an XP style menu as well. That two column menu would be best (it doesn’t need to be searchable; it just can’t be so awful like the “advanced” MATE menu that you have to search to find anything).
Whisker would probably work if there’s nothing closer to what he’s looking for. Has any work been done porting it to MATE?
He could live with the current menu, but he’d really like the button to be the Windows XP one. I can’t figure out how to change it. How did you get the whole button on that configuration?
I imagine you could simply install xfce4-panel. This comes with the whisker menu. Then run that at login instead of mate-panel. Having said that , I am probably making it sound a bit simpler than it is. That is to say, after installing xfce4-panel, you may find you need to install one or two other xfce bits and pieces to make it work (but you also may not need to). But, I should think it would be entirely doable.
The way i got the button was that is just came with the theme. so, I didn’t have to try and manually apply it. To do that, you would need to find it in the icons set and manually replace it with one using the same name
