What to delete on 14.04 Classic before installing Mate?

Hi,
I’m about to install Mate on my new desktop (64bits) that already runs the Flashback session on Ubuntu 14.04.
I have made a lot of changes in order to get the appearence I want, as getting rid of Unity and installing a lot of applications and themes. As I’m still not happy with the result I found Mate very attractive but before I install it I need to be shure I do it the right way.
I presume I don’t have to reinstall Ubuntu but should I reinstall the Flashback session? And what more would be best to delete?

You could install the ubuntu-mate-desktop package which will install everything you’d get from Ubuntu MATE on top of your existing Ubuntu installation, plus retains your existing files and programs. Remember to remove ubuntu-desktop (if installed, it probably won’t as you’ve removed Unity) and the flashback session packages.

There may be meta-packages, so “removing” them won’t actually uninstall everything until you manually remove the packages - you may find duplicates as a result:

  • Ubuntu - ubuntu-desktop

  • nautilus (Ubuntu’s File Manager)

  • gnome-calculator

  • eog (Ubuntu’s Image Viewer)

  • Ubuntu MATE - ubuntu-mate-desktop

  • caja (MATE’s File Manager)

  • mate-calculator

  • eom (Eye of MATE Image Viewer)

If you do install ubuntu-mate-desktop on top of Ubuntu, it’s pretty much an Ubuntu + Ubuntu MATE installation, so there could be possible problems later. For the least amount of potential problems, I’d recommend backing up all your files, record your installed programs and perform a clean installation.

Since the flashback session does not share the same settings as the MATE desktop so you’d need to re-setup these up either way I’m afraid.
