What's your general experience with VLC?

Just wondering. It doesn’t make me happy:

  • videos sometimes open at the wrong scale and are not fully displayed on my screen
  • the sound indicator integration is sometimes broken
  • I cannot seem to get rid of the tray icon

Is it just me or do you also have issues with VLC?

Thanks!

Overall - reasonable, with one qualification.

If I click on another part of the timeline of the video, it should just go to that point. But, in VLC, doing this can often cause VLC to hang

Disabling the tray icon works for me (on 16.04), but I have to restart VLC for this to take effect.

VLC is all I use but it has lots of quirks I live with. I would never say it was stable.

For example…

I setup a hotkey to force-copy an old config file because it still remembers MAXIMIZED when a video closes in FULL-SCREEN. If any VLC developers are reading this:

HEY YOU! FULL SCREEN ISN’T MAXIMIZED!!! :rage:

There… I feel better. Anyone have a better fix? :grinning:

Used to be a big fan of it until I went from a ATI to Nvidia card and the display dissapeared. I have since then replaced it by SMPlayer which seems to be equally rich in feature but I am not a big user of videos (Less than 10x a month).

I’ve also rarely had issues with it in windoze environments and still deploy it to my customers whenever needed.

Hope this helps!

I prefer Kodi with it’s wide variety of plugins and sharper, higher quality playback. I’ve had troubles off and on playing DVDs, so VLC is my fall-back media player. Overall, it’s been solid and robust, playing anything I throw at it–with the exception of the nightly builds of VLC 3, but that’s not altogether unexpected.

Thanks for all your feedback!

Anyone can reproduce VLC playing but the sound indicator telling you it's not playing?
