Where is "Places" located in 18.04?

Sorry I’m dense as a post, but I can not locate “Places” in the 18.04 Brisk menu.

In 16.04 that was how I accessed my USB drive on my NetGear AC1200 Range Extender. Sort of my local cloud.

Do I need to do it differently now?

As an aside I installed 18.04 on a Compaq CQ70 successfully.

Thanks, Fred

Hi @fey42, I can suggest using Mate-Tweak to select the panel layout “Traditional”. Except for the upper right ShutDown applet now missing, it’s very much like 16.04 layout. Including Places.

@Bill_MI
Please don’t tell me it has been eliminated, because they can and did.
I understand what you told me to do.
I just desire to run the standard release and not have to tweak to make it look like the old.

Can it be “placed/inserted” in the new “Familiar”?
Remembering I am such a novice.

Sorry if I am whining.
Thanks, Fred

Its not a tweak, its simply no longer a default. But still remains one of the many themes that are available, just like there were with 16.04.

You actually can but it takes some strange workarounds in MATE Tweak and temporarily setting Traditional just to isolate Places. And it will undo panel customizations you're already made.

  1. Select Traditional, just so "Panel Menu Features" gets enabled/ungrayed.
  2. In "Panel Menu Features" uncheck Applications and System so only Places remains checked.
  3. Select "Familiar" which is back to default.
  4. Add to Panel the "Menu Bar" which is now ONLY the Places portion. Place where you want it.

Of course, that's arguably more a tweak than just selecting Traditional which is there because some of us like it exclusively.

Thanks Bill, you have done your leader job and led me to reconsider my errant thinking. Choosing the already available built in “fix” is much preferable to forcing it.

My last question is: You “knew” the fix to my problem, could I have “found” it by pouring through the documentation?

Thank you so much, Fred

Not explicitly. That's what this board is for.

Here's my steps...

It comes from the older MATE-Tweak feature to separately enable the 3 items of Menu Bar (it's in 16.04). So I knew the ability to enable only Places should be possible. Here's the 18.04 mouse-over help for it:

I went to an 18.04 VM and tested it and discovered in Familiar this feature was grayed out and the only way to enable/set it was to select Traditional temporarily.

I went on to add the Menu Bar and test my idea and it worked so the procedure above was born.
