I recently got a donation of five laptops that are all several years old, so I immediately have installed Ubuntu MATE directly from an ISO. Yay!
On one of the laptops - only in Chrome - certain sites immediately crash the laptop. I think they’re generally high-CPU-intensive, but for example, CodeAnywhere.com, Telegram.me, and I found a site that plays a bunch of sound samples (you control the loop and make a song out of it, basically). However, Youtube and Netflix run fine.
Meanwhile, the method of the crash: The screen goes blank and nothing I’ve been able to do will recover from that. However, things still function. I can close tabs via CTRL-W, and moving the mouse around on the sound site, I could click and things were still running.
So this points to graphics… I checked and there are no proprietary drivers available.
Meanwhile, everything runs fine in Firefox with no crashes on any of these sites.
Where would you go from here? It’s probably not a MATE problem, so I don’t wanna bug you guys too much; but I’m not sure what support place to open a topic with.
Also, as an aside - my desktop is still in some weird xubuntu+MATE state; but it’s nice to be playing with the laptops that I blew away and installed Ubuntu MATE from a disc. MATE is GREAT!
