Which version to install?

G’day , I’m gonna setup an old PC for a friend and install Mate. Which would be the safest option? 16.10 LTS + updates or 17.04? Tia

I do not believe there is a 16.10 LTS.

16.04 is the latest.

Ubuntu Releases

The following releases of Ubuntu are available:

Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus)
Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus)

I’d pick the LTS, if only so I didn’t have to upgrade it every six months. As @fixit7 says, the current LTS is 16.04.

Either 16.04 if you don’t plan to update it often (you’ll have to update to 18.04 before 2021) and don’t mind having older versions of softwares; or 17.04 if you don’t mind updating every 6 monthes (you’ll have to update to 17.10 due in october, then 18.04 due in april 2018) and want more recent softwares.

If it’s not your own PC and you’re installing it for someone who’s not really tech-savvy, go for 16.04.
