Hi, new user.
I find some open windows (example: searching for printer drivers using ‘configure printer’) do not fit my screen, they only resize a little or not at all and then (for example) ‘forward’ or ‘next’ box cannot be reached by mouse thus nothing can be done further. I have checked the screen resolution is good. I cannot push the window up further or resize enough despite the ‘resize’ arrow opening in the window in some cases.
Thanks for any ideas.
This typically happens on monitors such as 1366x768. With the dialog box (or window) being open and active, press Alt and F7 - the pointer changes to a hand and you are able to move the window up so you can see (and click on) the OK, Forward or Next button.
Also holding down Alt then left-click will enable the same ability. Hope this helps.
Thanks for prompt reply, will try this later.
Hi
Can you mention what version of Ubuntu MATE you’re using please?
Under 16.10 there’s been a few resizing problems, but not on 16.04 afaik.
It is 16.0.4 LTS.
Has also ‘frozen’ twice which is a shame but will follow up on that later.
Can you please provide the output of the following command in a terminal (open with CTRL+ALT+T):
inxi -CG
thanks, copied out below
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-2450M (-HT-MCP-) cache: 3072 KB
clock speeds: max: 3100 MHz 1: 992 MHz 2: 924 MHz 3: 941 MHz 4: 1070 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 11.2.0
Anyway, @morgan, @mdooley this looks like a serious usability problem.
Since you guys have clear paths to reproduce can you identify the applications where this problem occurs (since it’s not limited, if I understand you right, only to the printer stuff) and grab screenshots?
Edit: note: you can easily grab screenshots using the PrintScrn key, then select “Copy to clipboard” and directly paste the image in your posts on this forums (that’s if you don’t need to edit the images to protect your privacy etc)
Will do when I can but do not have time immediately to replicate, lost too much time playing with this setup already.
As a btw the ‘freezes’ seem to occur with Altril or whatever it is called locking up everything, not that i am even using it but a prompt comes up saying it has a problem that i can sometimes see if not obscured by open windows. I have to then use a hard shut down.
I really want to move from Win10 and took this option of a clean install of Ubuntu Mate after reading many reviews, not looking good though. I will persevere for a few more days.
To replicate it, the window sizing problem, I would have to undo the printer setup which i finally got going (required software download that wouldn’t progress so i had to search/browse and faff a lot and needed fixing of some ‘Cups’ stuff and also a server menu tab set and software download/extract etc etc). Too hard for a common Epson xp-205 network but oh well it’s a free OS so shouldn’t complain.
I need a working laptop for a while but will ‘play’ when time is free and un-install then re-install printer using the above methods to ‘resize’ the window that i couldn’t get access to the ‘forward’ prompt on. Then i shall report again if thread still open.
Thanks.
Just to piggyback on this thread, I'm also experiencing a resizing problem. It's only happened with one program so far - spider solitaire. I have no idea how it happened. All I know is that I can't get to the menu buttons, and my only option is to hit a function key until the help screen appears. Then I gain access to the upper and lower panels, allowing me to right click and close the application. It takes up my whole screen otherwise.
That problem is not related. Solitaire is in full screen mode. Press the F11 key to switch back to windowed mode.
Oh, okay sorry. I don’t know why I didn’t discover that before. I’m pretty sure that I pressed every key in that row to get it to budge. It worked though. So thanks, @Dave_Barnes.
Damn you for reminding me of Sider Solitaire. Now i will have to go through the 101 step addiction program again! Sigh, five years without a single game … gone.
