Wine - libsane1:i386-Brother MFC printers

Hi all

I had started a new topic on this forum a couple of months ago… which was very informative lol.

I have since left to try MX and have now come back to try Ubuntu 17.10.1 AND I had managed to actually install my Brother MFC-L2710DW printer and have it actually working this time around. I was told by a Brother tech that it was quite important to have the lib32ncurses5 and lib32tinfo5 files installed prior to doing the Brother installation.

The next step was to install Wine and my one Windows program and try and get that working. That brought me back to my original Wine post (THANKFULLY) because installing the libsane1:1386 file beforehand made my Wine installation through the WineHQ website an absolute piece of cake! I also downloaded my one Windows program and used Wine to get it up and running as well.

BUT, it seems that doing this has actually ‘broken’ my printer installation as it no longer prints! I did manage a complete uninstall and reinstall of my Brother printer (thanks to all the help from Terzag and Beren last time) and all the required options that I required came up in the printer reinstall but the printer still will NOT print.

I do wonder if the libsane1:i386 file is in some way preventing my Brother printer from working or is stopping me from installing other files that my Brother printer needs to work properly.

I guess one question I have is that now that Wine is installed and working, would I be able to uninstall that libsane1:i386 file so it doesn’t impact on the printer or will that totally wipe my Wine installation?

Thanking you all in anticipation.
Michael

Okay… somehow I’ve actually got both my Windows program and my printer BOTH working. This has involved uninstalling both my printer and Wine at least twice lol. Interestingly enough, I still have the libsane1:i386 installed on my computer and the lib32ncurses5 and lib32tinfo5 are also still installed. Whether I can actually manage to replicate this when it comes to 18.04 is, of course, going to be the big test lol.

What things did I do differently? Firstly, I used a different IP address in setting up my printer. The IP address the Brother technician found for me when he installed the printer last time is not the same as the current IP address I’m getting from the system at the moment. Whether this makes a difference to the printing or will only help with scanning I simply don’t know. The first time I installed the printer, either it didn’t ask me for the IP address or I used the old one the Brother tech gave me… and it printed anyway. It was just what I did after with installing Wine that seemed to break it. Installing the printer, I followed the instructions on the Brother website implicitly and chose the dnssd option during the process when specifying the URI of my printer. And I used the current IP address the system is giving me for the printer.

The second thing I changed was that I didn’t include step 1 from WineHQ about adding the i386 architecture. I was reasonably sure the product I used didn’t specifically need 32 bit stuff and that it was a 64 bit product. Still, I did notice that even without this first step, there were a lot of 32 bit (i386) files that were installed with Wine using the WineHQ installation method. Still, I may try this on 18.04 the first time to see if it was what made a difference or not.

The third thing I did differently was that I immediately autoremoved any packages from the system that were no longer required just in case any of those were causing a conflict with my Brother printer.

Anyway, as it ‘currently’ stands, BOTH are working, so I guess it can be marked as SOLVED. Would it help if I supplied any information to the forum, like say inxi -F from terminal? I guess another question I do have, is will the WineHQ process from their website be any different when it comes to installing Wine for 18.04?

Cheers
Michael
