Won't shutdown unless hard power off

Just installed the latest mate version, like it with some minor difficulties.

  1. will not shutdown or reboot completely using the shutdown icon, it just locks up.

  2. what is the keyboard command to recall the shutdown menu (reboot, cancel, etc) on mate?
