Would this make a great dual boot machine?

Would this be a GREAT machine for dual boot windows and ubuntu! I’m about to drop the money down, but really don’t know if this is a great system of not. Technically would this run mate flawlessly?

I run Ubuntu 18.04 MATE in a 4GB VirtualBox VM in a 16GB Asus notebook and it snaps! No issues with a standard configuration and I’ve extended it with some non-MATE applications and built a few applications from source. Concurrently I run a 1GB XUbuntu VM that connects via a VPN, and I will now and then add in a 4 GB Debian VM for some Debian hobby work. All three VMs run with performance equal to the Windows 10 host. All excellent.

You should be fine.

To test, try a VirtualBox VM and evaluate the performance. This should give you confidence. On your machine a 4GB VM will leave 12 GB for you host OS, more than enough for any consumer level OS which I assume yours is.

You may find that the VM is good enough. I do. I can spend the whole day very happily in the VM while retaining the option to switch to Windows 10 without rebooting. Give it a try.

Both OSes should run just fine on that hardware. I’m no expert on AMD Processors, but I’m fairly sure my laptop has pretty much the same specs with a 7th gen Intel i7.

As far as the VM point goes, I do it the other way around. My SSD has one big happy Ubuntu partition on it, and I run Windows 10 in VIrtualbox, allotted two CPU cores and 6 of my 16 gigs of RAM, and it runs without a hitch. One thing I will say is that a 5400 RPM Drive might slow down the VM a bit, but If you end up dual-booting, there’s no need to worry about it.
