I have a computer I am buying from best buy, will ubuntu mate work on it?
Specs for the computer
I suspect it would mostly work.
Some of that you can’t actually know since like many dealers, this site does not give precise models for the network cards.
If you end up with Broadcom or Realtek network cards you might be in for a nasty surprise.
Not much you can do about it though unless you can collect lshw
output from a demo machine running the live USB.
I just put Ubuntu Mate on my new laptop with a Broadcom card and had no problem. I also dual boot Debian and had to go to the Debian site and download the driver and firmware-linux-nonfree package on a wired connection to get the wireless to work.
Ubuntu Mate should run fine there things to consider when purchasing a new computer these days and that would be UEFI / LEGACY bios UEFI mostly
This would only be a concern if you’re dual booting but if not there really no need to do much and you should be able to do a complete installation of Ubuntu mate
The best buy rep didn’t even know about linux.
I’m not surprised the staff there just know enough to make a sale they don’t really understand anything about installing Linux
Yeah I just got the computer, Linux works great. Just some issues with the wireless chipset
If you have questions about your wireless chip you can open a new thread and make sure you use the appropriate tag to get the best help possible
