Am running 18.04.1 full patch. I have just deployed today's new kernel and now I have weird static noise coming out all of my sources (online streaming, local music, movie, etc).

Not having problem on my ASUS (P10S-WD).

Have you tried going into GRUB menu and booting with older kernel to see if it goes away? Iā€™m wondering if it was the kernel update, or another update that dropped at the same time.

So after several more times and upgrades I am still facing the same issue.

What I have discovered more is:

  1. This happens randomly, regardless of which version of kernel/headers is being used;
  2. This seems to be WEB related because closing firefox ALWAYS fixes this problem;
  3. I believe that something happens when I am on FB because that's mostly when it starts going nuts (Listening to a youtube video in a different tab and writting in FB, this is most-always-the-setup-that-makes-the-sound-go-into-static-mode;
  4. Perhaps more intriguing is the fact that I seem to be hearing "claps" from my speakers when their physical volume (button) is very high. (6/10). What I mean by "clap" sound is that, for no reason (I can be in a terminal or doing whatever), just appears for half a split second.

Even though it is not very clear I could possibly make a parallel in between that "clap" sound and when one closes a live video running: at the end there is a tiny little sound artifact. Well this artifacts seems to be poping up every now and then.

I am also using SMPlayer and VideoLAN in alternance and I have noticed that both players do not seem to interact the same w/ the sound library.

Again, am quite possibly the only user in this forum having this issue/using this setup but I wanted to give more input on what the problem is as at the time of posting this I am still having this issue.

Just upgraded to 19.10 and made sure that all of my system was running latest and I have just faced the same problem. I had to not only close my FB tab but also firefox for audacious to resume playing music normally.

That is, without any static.
