About half an hour ago I accepted an automatic update and now 24.04 is not working. Only booting in safe mode starts the system. The problems is that doesn't start the greeter (or the X server?).
The most relevant is that I can't start nor the old install (22.04) that is on a separate partition. I thought is something wrong in grub, but at a first glance I can't see nothing abnomal.
Any idea?
The welcome app was removed in 24.04 along the software app.
did you do the checksum thing?
Hi marius, I don't understand well wat you mean, anyway I installed slick-greeter days ago and it was running well.
Hi mickee, no I don't, it was an automatic update, I didn't nothing else than accept the update.
OK, I installed the 24.04 about 10 days ago, fresh install. Everything was working fine until yesterday night, when I made the update.
I was not upgrading from 23.10.
Run uname -r in terminal and write the kernel version you are using.
If you boot to second to last kervel via Advanced in grub (hit e on boot to see the grub menu if you do not have dual boot).
If that works in non safe mode, then rollback to it and the ladt kernel version is the issue.
See for rolling back Dell Latitude E6500 will not shut down on 22.04 kernel v 5.15.0-119 vs 117 - #4 by marius-ciclistu
I did an upgrade of my UMATE 24.04 in VM. The new kernel was installed, namely 6.8.0-41
. The system boots normally (it has slick-greeter
). You may have problems with the new kernel, so try booting the previous one.
Actually the problem was HW. I have a Ryzen 3 cpu with integrated Radeon GPU. I don't know why and how in Bios was selected PCE graphic card (non existent) instead of the onboard Radeon. Probably the battery of the MoBo was exhausted and messed something.
Anyway, now I can log into the 22.04 install, but not in the 24.04.
The problem is that slick-greeter appears, I can put the password, it accepts the password, but can't open the session and loop back to the password prompt. I tried with the visible password, I can see that the characters are correct.
Notice that I can login by command line CTRL+ALT+F2, the user exist and the password is correct. I modified the lightdm.conf in order to permit the manual login, by introducing user and password but same result.
Probably I broke something trying an trying to login.
From command lkine I purged slick-greeter and installed arctica-greeter, but the result is the same. Probably there is something wrong in my account that blocks the graphical session.
GOT IT!
I found that the file /home/user/.Xauthority was owned by root, I changed the owner to my user and now I can log into the 24.04.
No idea why that file was to root, actually another file of mine, nothing to do with system, was owned by root and I had to change it to my user.
Something happened during the update, but no idea what.
