I want to reinstall UM in my PC. For this particular LT, would you recommend the 64 or 32 bit version of UM?

and the RAM does count as four (although I have seen it being indicated as 3,7 somewhere)?
4GB ram is reported as 3.7 … see diff between GB (1000^3) and GiB (1024^3)

Yes, the chip is 64-bit so install an OS that is 64-bit. You have enough ram. Enjoy UM …

These days it makes no sense whatsoever to install a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit system - even with just 2 GB of RAM I’d still go with 64 bit.
We are seeing 32 bit support winding down more and more, so going with 64 bit is a much safer bet.

As ThinkPad SL500 (2746 chassis) user I can recommend buying 8 Gb RAM for the laptop.
I have 2 DDR2 SO-DIMMs (labeled Hynix 4 GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666-12 HMP351S6AFR8C-S6 AB).
My SL works well with 64-bit Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS
