I love Ubuntu MATE, but I’m not so big a fan of the custom launcher icon (of which I have on my Ubuntu MATE 14.04 top panel). Is there any way to change the custom launcher icon to a user chosen/made icon?
If you use the Basic Menu.
You will have to replace an icon with the one you want to use. But I do not remember which one.
If you use the Mate-Menu (Advanced Menu).
You can change the icon by right-clicking on the menu and choosing Preferences. You can then change the icon under Button icon.
In dconf-editor you can go to /org/mate/panel/menubar and change icon-name to whichever icon you wan't

Sorry, but none of these answers are working. I even tried enabling and setting custom icons (through both Dconf and gsettings) without any luck. Maybe I should just get used to it.
If you tried dconf you need to place the icon in your current icons folder . (Forgot to mention) . If you choose the Ambiant-Mate icon set you have to put the image in that folder . Also when you specify the image name “start-here-new” do not add the extension like .png or .jpeg . It is best prefered that the image is png or svg format .
