I have configured mate to work internally, however i am frequently away from home.
Is there any way to configure mate/firewall/anything so i can access it from outside my home network?

Yes.
If you have a static public IP you just have to redirect the necessary ports towards your machine’s IP in your LAN.
If you don’t have a static IP you need to connect your machine to a VPN so it will have a static IP in the virtual network. I do that by renting a dedicated server running OpenVPN.
There’s also some less expensive options such as Teamspeak et al. But I haven’t researched those enough to be able to recommend them.
Cheers
