Is there any update with the ability for the PDF reader to read epub format. Really want this as it would be one less thong to install.
EPub support was added in MATE 1.10. Ubuntu MATE, including the recently released alpha 2 of 15.10, doesn’t have 1.10 yet, but it’s “coming soon” (see alpha 2 link) and should be in the final release of 15.10.

Great news!!! 
I know that there is EPUB support now but it is buggy at best. Most times it would not even start on my system. Is any one else having this problem?

have you tried “sigil”?:
sudo apt-get install sigil
Its a multi platform Ebook editor!. 
Just wanted a reader though. Not an editor.
