Any advantage to getting an external DVD burner?

Any advantage to getting an external DVD burner ?

I have extra 3.0 ports.

Thanks

Yes, the ease of replacement [1], the portability, and the fact that you only need one burner if you have several computers.

In my experience there is no difference in lifespan/durability or even speed between a build-in burner or an external one.

I have an external DVD-burner (which also gets its power from USB) and it is the DVD-burner that turned out to be the one with the longest lifespan of any burner I had.

it's this one:

EDIT: finally got the footnote syntax right

  1. Since the laser of a DVD burner has a limited lifespan (4000 to 6000 hours theoretically, often shorter) it has to be replaced every few years when it is intensively used.
    .
During the first 1000 hours of use, the intensity of the laser slowly drops to it's final intensity of ± 70% and stays there for the rest of the lifespan.
    .
A lot of CD/DVD equipment will already fail at this time because the factory calibration of the laser intensity is set too low, either by incompetence or ill will.
Good calibrated CD/DVD equipment will keep on working for the full 6000 hours. ↩︎

Interesting info.

I think watching too many movies takes away from helping people.
