Any updates on the current state of Ubuntu MATE 24.04 and beyond ...?

Hi to everyone. I posted here a while ago. I'm still on Linux Mint using a pseudo-MATE interface (with two bars; one at the bottom and one at the top). It works for me. But I'd prefer to use actual MATE (because it's the real thing). That said, have any more efforts been expended towards fixing bugs and whatnot? For example, is the installer fixed now? Before, it was so buggy. It kept stopping on me and so on. I was shocked at how bad it was. And what about the bugs in the OS? Have they been ironed out? It's been a few months since Ubuntu 24.04 was released. If things haven't been fixed, I'll continue using Linux Mint. Thanks to everyone.

P.S.: I could switch to Linux Mint MATE, but ... yeah. I dunno. Not the same.

It's helpful if you're specific with details. Ubuntu MATE 24.04 LTS uses the new ubuntu-desktop-installer, as ubiquity used on releases up to 23.10 is now deprecated.

The ubuntu-desktop-installer was seen before on Ubuntu Desktop 23.04 & 23.10, plus Ubuntu-Budgie 23.10, but wasn't used before by Ubuntu-MATE.

You mention no bugs, so your question is impossible for anyone to answer. Given you know (I hope) what bugs you're referring to, you can go and look up the state of those bugs yourself, as without them being reported the developers can't work on them, and without us being told which bugs you refer to we can't know and thus comment on them.

There won't be a new Ubuntu-MATE 24.04 LTS ISO released until the team releases Ubuntu-MATE 24.04.1 LTS which is still scheduled for 15 August 2024.

Go here: New to Ubuntu MATE, my desktop, and a couple questions - #3 by Omnimaxus. I gave a few examples of bugs here. I hope they will be fixed by 24.04.1. I believe the buggy performance of the installer has been reported by others, too. It's not just me who's encountered this kind of thing. Thanks.

You've provided no details of installer bugs for me to look up. Bugs should be reported on bug trackers so developers can see it, otherwise they don't actually exist.

Your link provides provides mention of some things you didn't like relating to how you see user experience, but those were vague and often don't relate to the MATE experience at all.

Irregular graphic glitches in a couple Linux games.

these will not relate to the MATE desktop I bet at all, but relate to kernel being used, and kernel module (aka graphics driver) where specifics are required of what is running (both software stack & your hardware) is required; let alone not listing the games (so others can test for issues).

Volume would turn on or off by itself after waking up.

This is likely kernel related too; hardware details, plus kernel and other stack details are required. Kernels, kernel modules etc. are not issues that are dealt with by the Ubuntu-MATE, but by upstream Ubuntu project.

There was no bug report in your link, with very limited detail at all provided (in my opinion). Your returning to Linux Mint probably worked because it was likely using an older kernel I bet (ie. not 6.8) and is unrelated to the Ubuntu-MATE desktop at all.

Bug reports belong on bug trackers, which means launchpad for most of Ubuntu, though for Ubuntu-MATE you can also use Ubuntu MATE · GitHub

The ubuntu-desktop-installer isn't Ubuntu MATE specific; as Ubuntu-MATE is only one of the 7 flavors using it (plus Ubuntu Desktop), so bugs relating to the installer need to reported so Ubuntu Developers are aware of the issue & can work in resolving issues; they don't use this site. Likewise the Ubuntu kernel developers use a different discourse site too.

Yes, many bugs can be reported here, and users of this site may decide to test it themselves, and then report the bug on bug-trackers for the original poster, but if you want issues resolved, it's best not to hope others do this for you; and report where it's got a chance of being fixed.

Thanks for the GitHub link. I am not using Ubuntu MATE, and have no plans to install it right now. I am unable to help troubleshoot or more specifically identify the bugs I encountered. I'm going to wait for the 24.04.1 release, though, and I'll wait for community feedback before deciding to install it (to see if there's any word of bugs still being present).

Hi @Omnimaxus,

I want to underline what @guiverc said about reporting problems in the forum that is most appropriate for such reporting, but for the general audience of the community who are willing to put the effort in communicating details about any issue, not just for you.

I will try to use an analogy regarding Canada's Crown Corporations, to clarify the need for investing some of that willingness and energy in correctly identifying the proper channel for any such reporting.

And so, my analogy ...

If you have an issue with the equipment, or quality of service, provided by Canada Post, it makes no sense to approach Customer Care at Via Rail. Yes, they are both part of the Federal Government, at arms length, but nothing reported to Via Rail will ever see the light of day at Canada Post, who will remain oblivious to the issue, until the end of times, unless they are approached directly.

I hope that helps make that need of identifying the proper channel a more instinctive behaviour when such a need arises in the future, and not an after thought.

(I will admit  to being guilty of doing the same sometimes, but only in those rare instances when I am really underwater with other things demanding my attention.)
