Hi, I am trying to run Ubuntu Mate on a Apple Power Macintosh G5 2.7 DP (PCI-X) and I get the black screen past boot even though I type live
live video=ofonly
The graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9650.
How can I overcome this please.

I had this problem at first. It was usually resolved with a couple of presses of ctrl-option-delete. After I started using an HDMI connection to my monitor, the problem disappeared.
@tomi thanks for that, I tried the ctrl-option-delete but it didn’t work. Actually I am after a permanent solution as I would like to install Ubuntu Mate on this G5.
I think that its a matter of giving yaboot the right instructions to load the ATI Radeon 9650 graphics driver, but how can I accomplish that?
I do not know anything about modifying yaboot. I have the G5 and Mate 15.10 as well as 16.04.1 have worked as distributed on it The double ctrl-option-delete trick worked for me but I always had to enter it twice.
My old monitor was connected with a VGA cable. I knew it worked with the G5 because when I booted into the MacOS, it worked. Booting into Linux required entering the ctrl-option-delete twice. When I bought a new monitor and connected it via HDMI using an adapter, I no longer had the problem. As I recall, my G5 has the same graphics driver you mention.
Hi @fab,
maybe try installing the AMD drivers (use at your own risk!):
