Has anyone tested which compositor in 16.04 works the best with gaming?
I have not tested compiz or compton for gaming, but marco + composit works for our games. I run an older geForce.
I use Compiz, which behaves just fine. On my system (NVIDIA, proprietary drivers), software marco produces screen tearing. I haven’t tried Compton yet.
I’d say either GPU-based compositors would be better suited for gaming then CPU-based ones if using an NVIDIA card.
I use the marco (compton GPU compositor) and I think gaming looks beautiful with it.
In this benchmark, MATE scores very badly (FPS) compared to Unity and other DE’s.

I get different results when testing with glxgears.
~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.395 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.000 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.001 FPS
Did you even look at the benchmarks in the Phoronix article?
And glxgears is not a benchmark, its only a very basic opengl support test.
Ofcourse, did I study it? No
Of course it holds not contest to Phoronix, I didn't think that need be said.
According to those results if gaming FPS is your goal it would be more prudent to look at a different DE (like Unity) than the different compositors available on MATE.
According to Michael “More tests – including from other GPUs/drivers – are still baking” so I would be on the look-out for those results.
