Blank screen after updating to MATE 24.10

Hi. I have upgraded both my pc's to Ubuntu Mate 24.10. But when I boot I get a blank screen with a mouse hovering, but Mate 24.10 does not come up. I have tried recovery mode as well but without any success. The same result on both computers. One is running Intel i9-13900 with Intel Iris Xe Graphics max 1,50 GHz. The other runs AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS with AMD Radeon™ 780M graphics. No problems with upgrading to basic Ubunto 24.10 on any of the 2 pc's. Linux and windows are on separate NVmes / SSDs in both installations.
I have been vcery happy with Ubuntu Mate and hope to get back to using Mate again.

Hi, @erik_m and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!

I had the same problem. Tried purging and reinstalling lightdm, it fixed the issue for me.
This is what I did:

  • During boot-up press shift key repeatedly to go grub options
  • Choose latest kernel but with recovery options
  • Open cli as root
  • Removed lightdm by running apt purge lightdm
  • Installed lightdm by running apt install lightdm
  • Ran 'lightdm' which brought up the login screen but couldn't use mouse or keyboard. Probably this step was unnecessary.
  • Did a hard shutdown and booted up again. Got the login screen okay and I was able to login fine.

I wasn't sure this would work. I had the 24.04 LTS usb ready to start a fresh installation just in case.

Hi, @ahill and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!

Hi ahill
Thanks fort getting back to me so quickly. I am not so deep into Linux so this sounds to me as deemed to be a failure for me. But I have now installed a fresh Ubuntu Mate 24.10 in a new partition on one of the pc's and it booted up again fine. I might try this on the other pc too - and in both cases use some time for reinstalling needed apps.

I have also thought it might have something to do with graphics as my screen runs 3840x2160. So I think You are right about lightdm being the cause of the problem. Hava a nice weekend.
