Browsers missing from Ubuntu Mate 19.04

Gday

I would like to request Ubuntu and Ubuntu mate please add to the apt-get system:-
Iridium-browser
Waterfox

They are not available in apt-get install or snap install
under the command line

If needed I can provide photo images of it not working in the command line

Reason to add it to apt-get system

I myself and many others that support data privacy and free speech have move away from Chrome and Firefox

They are no longer trusted, privacy focused or support peoples freedoms

I would like to request Ubuntu and Ubuntu Mate support

  • Iridium Browser as an option for users instead of Defaulting to Chrome/Chromium
  • Waterfox Browser as an option for users install of Defaulting to Firefox

Microsoft + Apple + Firefox + Google have shown massive amounts of disrespect, anti consumer , anti privacy a lot in the last 9 years

Yet distros still keep on pushing them as the default , why ?

Chrome and Firefox have pulled Gab Dissenter
Chrome and Firefox by default spy on the users
Chrome and Firefox by default are bloated

Chrome and Firefox have found to have major issues with privacy and users data , thus the needs of the forked browsers:-

  • Chromium and Iridium browser instead default chrome
  • Palemoon + Librefox + Waterfox instead of default Firefox

Its amazing how many " open source" supporters are willing to support large corporations and companies that repeatedly act against the best case for the user and are infact are ANTI CONSUMER and ANTI privacy

Yet at the same time these people are like
use Libre Office instead of MS Office

and are the same people that push for everyone and their dog to user free open source video card drives. Yet they don't want to support using privacy focused browsers
its never truly following the same standards and logic ?

Here's my two cents:
My proposal would be to involve Chromium/Firefox as defaults. However, in the "Browser Defaults" section of the welcome screen, add a "Freedom" section for more free-related browsers such as Pale Moon, Waterfox, etc.

They also have included the brave browser which respects a user's privacy pretty well

We don't have the man power to have all the browsers included especially those ho needs manually compiling from source code. Please make a request with the devs from the app you want to make it as a snap, deb or ppa.

For your information - MATE Welcome have a lot of browsers on the Browser Selection tab:

The complete list here is the following:

  • Firefox
  • Chromium
  • Vivaldi
  • Google Chrome
  • Opera
  • Vivaldi

The browsers from your request are not packaged even in Debian - see results from Repology:

The Waterfox seems available as a Snap.
If you want Iridium-Browser and Waterfox to be packaged, then write packaging request to Debian and/or Ubuntu.

You may be interested in installing SeaMonkey. I have installed it from UbuntuZilla repository.

You can get a deb package of WaterFox from here

Those builds are out of date and contain known vulnerabilities - I would not recommend those.

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/hawkeye116477:/waterfox/xUbuntu_Next/ /' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/home:hawkeye116477:waterfox.list"

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install waterfox

that's much better

Glad that helped:sunglasses:
