Bulk file rename utility?

I’ve been trying out Xfce/Xubuntu recently, and one thing I especially like is Thunar (the Xfce file manager)'s built-in bulk file rename utility. Gnome just added a similar feature in its latest release. Now I miss this ability in Caja.

I don’t want to switch to away from Caja when using MATE. Is there a good-standalone bulk-file renaming utility anyone can recommend?

I don’t often have a use for it, but pyrenamer is my choice. It’s in our sources.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check it out.

For others’ reference, Robert Tari has created and just announced a batch renaming extension for Caja, Caja Rename. I tried it and it integrates and works well.

Thanks for the heads-up, @elcste - looks interesting. I will test it once this bug has been resolved:

Renaming can replace files without warning
https://bugs.launchpad.net/cajarename/+bug/1675921

I use the trusty rename command in terminal. It has Perl expression support and a “dry run” option.

Package “rename”:

Perl extension for renaming multiple files
This package provides both a perl interface for renaming files
(File::Rename) and a command line tool 'rename' which is intended to
replace the version currently supplied by the perl package.

Yes, I submitted that bug report after trying it out, and the developer is already working on a fix :grinning:

The fix is already out, that was fast

Work has started on bringing Cajarename to the official Debian and Ubuntu archives.
