Caja: incomplete translations

Hello all

I just installed Ubuntu Mate 24.04.1 (new install) and I encounter some issues with Caja.
Chosen Language is French.

The informations given by the columns "Taille" (=size) and "Type" are not fully translated:

Capture du 2024-09-29 12-31-02

"items" should be "éléments", "folder" should be "dossier"… but some other translations are actually as expected.

I don't have any issue with other applications.

Any idea?

Hello,

If you are determined to enhance French translations for Caja, then there is a possibility to volunteer and contribute at MATE Desktop Environment localization | Transifex

I should have been more specific:
I have used Ubuntu many for many years and it's the first time I have this issue. In previous versions everything was translated correctly as far as I remember.

Maybe the problem is not in Caja (and its translations) itself but in the way the system recognises what type is attributed to a file?

BTW, I already do translations for small projects.

Hello,
I had a quick look and this is not specific to Caja, nor Ubuntu.
Theses lines come from "shared-mime-info" and the French translation is not complete.

Example:

Un ou une francophone qui passe par ici peut aider en suivant ce lien :

Bonne soirée

Thank you. I'll look into that.

Merci.

Thank you for that, @Mejans .

I will take a look as well and see what I can do there.

I am shocked to see that it was showing at ONLY 76% complete for French !!! :frowning:

So ... I glanced at

po/fr.po

and noticed instances of

msgstr ""

Are those the ones that need to be "filled" ?

Oui et non ^^
The synchronisation between the files at Transifex and the git has not been done for 10 months so the git may not be reflecting the real % of translation.

I looked for the "item" issue, it is not in Caja. I wonder where it comes from =/
I would not say "shocking" but yes for a file that is used by a lot of distro, it is weird that no French speaker reported this before.

I tried to do edits directly, hoping to lock while I edited.

I was denied, so I am working on a downloaded copy which I hope to upload.

I had the impression that the URL I gave was the master file for French.

Is it not?

Pas compris ^^
Il faut passer par Transifex pour réaliser la traduction.
Je ne me rappelle plus si les demandes pour rejoindre l'équipe de traductions sont automatiques ou approvées à la main.

I've been involved as the French translator for Sylpheed e-mail client since 2006. Since this project has been like dead for over two years, maybe I can really have a look at what we have here.

BTW: for some reasons the version of Sylpheed included in Ubuntu 24.04 is a beta version. So expect to have incomplete translations. Blame whoever you want, not me.

Another question: I see that Caja's version is 1.26.3 and Mate's version is 1.26.2. Is there a chance that this causes the issue we have?

And I guess that nobody reported this issue maybe because people like to use Caja with "Vue en icône" and not "Vue en liste".
