Can I keep my Ubuntu MATE 22.04LTS updated till 2032 if I have Ubuntu Pro?

For me it’s the best OS and I don’t want the apt update to break

Hi, @Miguel_Duarte and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!

You can keep Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as long as you want; however due to it's End of Life status you'll not be very secure (so only use it offline!)

Ubuntu Desktop/Server are still supported, as they're both within the 5 years of standard support, and have ESM or Extended support still to come.

Any packages in main come with security checks performed by the Ubuntu Security team; those found in universe only if you have Ubuntu Pro enabled.

When Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will transition from standard support, I'd expect (same as 14.04 thru 20.04 in the past) a list of security notices telling you what deb packages are no longer supported; and instructions to replace specific apps (or apps using those libraries no longer supported) to snap packages which will still be maintained.

Not all architectures have ESM/Pro support; some only have standard support; thus what options you have are specific to your architecture too don't forget.

The GNOME desktop is what gets security fixes; with exception being any specific apps where support is provided via snap packages only (see prior note), but in the past there have been few of them (it's mostly apps like browsers, mail clients etc).

If your machine is used offline; then all of this is moot as security won't really be a concern anyway. How you use your device may also impact security decisions.

Read what is covered by Extended support, and particularly what is NOT covered - it's there in docs, and those are your best bet. Also don't forget to read all, and not just the marketing spin telling you how great Ubuntu ESM/Pro is.
