Can't first boot clean install of 18.04

Lenovo ThinkPad T420, clean install of Ubuntu Mate 18.04 LTS.

After going through the installer it prompts me to ‘remove installation medium’ then tells me to reboot. It then hangs, so I power off, and on reboot I only get a black screen with a flashing cursor.
I’d appreciate any help.

I’ve tried reinstalling clean but this happens everytime.
