Can't open .HEIC pictures

And once again @Philippe have you determined if the HEIC photo was taken with an iOS18 device (aka iPhone18)?

Have you even tried the latest version of heif-gdk-pixbuf?

I have the latest version heif-gdk-pixbuf and I have zero issues opening any HEIC photo taken with any iOS device including iOS18.

This must be a regional thing (UK here), because I could download the original file without signing up by clicking "Or continue with download only" at the bottom like in @Philippe's screenshot.

The file metadata says:

$ mediainfo * | grep iOS
Writing application : Apple iOS 26.2.1

@Norm24's correct. I just tried Ubuntu MATE 24.04 too - I installed heif-gdk-pixbuf, re-logged back in and it still didn't recognise it.

I found this PPA which backports the newer library, and can confirm that works in 24.04.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/libheif
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libheif1 heif-gdk-pixbuf heif-thumbnailer

The thumbnail appeared, but I had to manually assign to "Open With" Eye of MATE in order to view it.

I used this one libheif : “struktur AG” team but it achieves the same exact goal which was also the solution I presented in post #5.

I had to do the same.

I don’t know the phone model taken the picture. It came from a group a person in a social network.

New link, same picture, can you test on your side:

I can not open the pictures you posted although I have the heif and pixbuf libraries installed.

The format of those pictures is probably too new for my current libs.
(this is both on 24.04 and on 26.04)

It would seem to me the file is corrupt

@Philippe have you added either ppa that myself or @lah7 suggested and upgraded to the latest version and then try to open the photo(s) in question?

Since you can't determine if the photos were taken with iOS18 it might be worth a try and upgrade to the latest version of heif-gdk-pixbuf and see if the photos open.

I confirm the picture downloaded from swisstransfer is not corrupted. So jymm, you have the same issue as me, can’t show the picture.

I confirm the picture is taken from iPhone 15.

I confirm I don’t updated the library from the PPA from now.

Same issue on windows 11 for your information.

So this photo is taken with an older iPhone and it won't open in either Ubuntu24.04 or Win11.By default Win11 can open any .HEIC file.

This leads me to believe that this is an issue on your end or the files in question are indeed altered and/or corrupted. This or the sourceb of the photo itself is suspect.

I repeat again, the picture is not corrupted.

I confirm the picture is readable on my phone Android 11.

This has become incredibly confusing.

What you are saying is that the .HEIC photo in question CANNOT be displayed on your current Ubuntu MATE 24.04 install and your Windows 11 install?

But it CAN be displayed on your Android 11 phone?

Sorry to repeat, but as this type of picture .HEIC is difficult to open, I want to know how to open it on Ubuntu Mate.

So, I confirm it’s show on my phone Android 11, screenshot bellow from my phone.

Can’t open in windows 11 with main gallery, but open in MS Teams

Can’t open with imgur

This will be the only thing that I will address as Win11 and the various online image hosting services you use have no bearing on this.

I have no issues opening .HEIC photos on my 24.04 system.I have heif-gdk-pixbuf version 1.19.8 installed and I can open .HEIC photos from any iOS version.

My suggestion once again is to install the latest version of heif-gdk-pixbuf available for 24.04 and see if the photo opens. If it opens great,if it doesn't then you just uninstall the newer version and it's PPA and reinstall the original from the repos and you're back where you started and then you can try another approach.

After updated with this ppa added, all pictures .HEIC are readable with Ubuntu Mate.
