Can't run administrative apps in 14.04

I’ve tried to open a few applications that require you to enter the admin password, like GParted, Aptik, and Synaptic Package Manager. the password prompt appears, I enter the password, the window closes, aaand… nothing. I’m trying to start the applications from the “Applications” and “System>Administration” menus at the top of the screen.

What about using the terminal, will it take your password?

Code:

gksudo synaptic

Nope, nothing happened. It returned this error though:

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyerror: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.

(synaptic:23735): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

Got some hits on that

Whats your thoughts?

Gtk warnings are not a concern.

Are you logged in as first user (system admin/root) or as a guest or other user?.

I just changed my account type to “Administrator”. Do I need to restart? I can’t right now because I’m installing updates.

I assume that you have done a restart in the meantime?, is it working okay now?.

Yep, everything works like it should!
