Change Wallpaper for different workspaces

Xubuntu has this functionality for years, yet even Unity Ubuntu does not have it. Any particular reason for that?

I remember I also looked for this possibility when I was using Unity and Cinnamon and somehow I threw the towel in.
But now that you mention it, @Stanley_Mitchell, you’re not the only one to wish this.
This is also a wish of the Linux Mint community: http://community.linuxmint.com/idea/view/2676 (note someone proposes a script to address this in the comment section)
Probably a topic where forces can be combined to address this upstream by the MATE developers for the benefit of all MATE-based distros?

I just tried out that script and it worked in 16.04

Actually, this functionality already exists in MATE for those who have Compiz running. See the “Wallpaper” plugin.

Also, in Xubuntu, you can elegantly switch workspaces by either:

  1. mousing to the edge of the current workspace
  2. using the scrollwheel when the cursor is over the background (no window)

I have not been able find how to do that in Marco.

Also, in Unity, you could actually drag a window from one workspace to another. Can’t do that in either MATE nor Xubuntu. Possibly in Compiz, I have not gone to the trouble to install that yet.

(In MATE you can send a window to another workspace or switch workspaces by keybinding, but that is cumbersome)

Drag to different workspace is working for me in 16.04.

You can switch to another workspace with scrollwheel, you only have to be in the area that shows workspaces.

You can also switch open windows with scrollwheel in same workspace if you are at that part of the screen.
