Changing Default Icons in Caja [SOLVED]

It doesn’t appear to be possible in Gnome3, but can I add emblems? In particular, I’d like to change the Document (Word) emblem.

Thanks,
Jake

Hi Jake,

right click any folder icon > Properties and click on its icon in the top left of the window > Pixmaps if that is what you mean?:

Haven’t verified if it works but have you tried adding and/or replacing emblems in the respective folder?

Or better yet, in Caja >> Edit >> Backgrounds and Emblems >> Emblems >> Add New Emblem

Sorry if I have misunderstood your question, sir.

Many thanks to both of you for your fast, helpful replies. Both of your approaches work very well for individual files and folders. I’m still hoping to replace the Document emblem in caja and replace it with a WinWord emblem.

Thanks to your suggestions, I was able to insert the winword xpm into the emblem menu, so it’s there, but upon its access (Properties/Emblems), it appears only to tag the original Document icon at the top right. I’m hoping for an outright replacement.

I suppose if I can find the directory of caja’s emblems, I could delete the original with the WinWord .xpm (if the emblems are xpm files).

Very much appreciate your help.

Emblems are scattered throughout the icon theme folders so make a search for the particular emblem file to know it’s location and then make the replacement.

Or, as it looks like the Documents emblem is symbolic, it might be easier to find and replace the file it’s linked to, in your current icon theme.

So for me it would be /usr/share/icons/Faenza/emblems/< somefolder >/emblem-documents.png

I think, please let us know how it goes.

Hi Jake,

copy and paste (as root) the desired icon into: File system user > share > pixmaps and then do as I suggested above!.

Thank you both again.

Wolfman’s solution is a good, for changing the icon for single files. Is there a way to make that universal, for all document files in caja?

I’ve looked through all emblem-document icons but none of them match caja’s default choice. I’ve searched 18.3 Sylvia file system for “emblem” and “document” and while I get plenty of hits, none are the actual icon.

I believe I figured it out–I was on the wrong track with emblems, it was a mimetype issue. So root into:

/usr/share/icons/Mint-X/mimetypes/48 [if you’re using Mint-X icons from Appearance/Customize/Icons]

rename application-msword.png to another name and drop in an icon of your choice named application-msword.png. Logout, back in, and icon becomes universal for all ms word docs.

Because my original heading was about emblems rather than mimetypes, I’ve edited the post title more appropriately.

Thanks to all that got me on the right path.
