Thank you for the welcome.
I finally took the plunge to Linux after a computing history which started with BBC moving on to Acorn/RISCOS - DOS based machines and from there the very first little black and white box on my screen called Windows. I’ve been through all except millennium and Windows 10 broke me!! I have completed 3 out of 4 machines to Ubuntu Mate.
I cannot work out how to ask a question on the Forum - seems daft after everthing else!!!
My husband has a collection of photographs running into thousands all filed by year and catergory - example of problem =

on ubuntu using Caja the display result =

I am defeated I’ve racked my brain through and possibly know why but how to correct it defeats me.
Would using a different file manager be the answer.
Thanks for you patience in reading - perhaps you could direct me either how to ask question and where or just give me an answer.
I have no problems with having to do something technical - terminal or whatever but don’t know what!!

It’s going to be a problem because “a” and “b” always sort before space and other characters. (By the way, will there ever be foreign accents?)
The latest Nautilus file manager for Ubuntu Mate (16.04) does the same as caja.
Do you need the file manager on the screen to do the ordering you want, or would a text file of the names of the files be sufficient?

If you click on the blue square next to "Support & Help Requests" you will see a page that lists recent questions and, over on the right of the heading, a button marked "+ new Topic".
