We now have two Compton compositors to choose from in mate-tweak. They both seem to work for me, so now I wonder what the difference is.

I am pretty shure that is a bug in mate-tweak it duplicated compton in the list of wms .

The duplicate is now gone and I now have just one compton. Maybe the reboot did it.

Compton is available for use with Marco (installed by default) and also Metacity (not installed by default) via MATE Tweak.
And it appears to work like it should. But to be honest, looks like I really don’t have much use for it as long as compiz is alive
