My apologies if this question has already been posted. I just installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 on my HP 2570p laptop. I would like to create a disk image of this computer for recovery purposes on an external hard drive which is currently formatted NTFS. I see that the Disks utility will do this but when I try to create the image I get the error pictured below.
Do I need to perform this operation while booted from the live cd or is there another reason for the error? Also, I have a True Image 2017 (linux) rescue cd which I have used successfully to image a Windows 10/Ubuntu 16.04 dual boot computer. Has anyone used this option to image a Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 install?
Sorry i can’t offer a solution to that specific question, since i’ve never used Disks for that purpose.
When i want to create a copy of a filesystem on a usb stick, i use gparted. I just wipe the device’s partition table by creating a new one, and create a partition on the usb stick. Then i leave gparted and use rsync to copy the partition to be saved onto the newly created partition. In every case i can think of, rsync is faster than dd for copying an existing filesystem. Just be sure that when you create your backup partition, it’s some linux filesystem you format it to, fat filesystems forex don’t store all the properties etc to make a working backup of a system partition.
FWIW, I tried booting to the 16.04.2 live cd and creating a drive image from the Disks app to my external USB drive. I got yet a different error message which appears below. I decided to simply use Clonezilla as most seem to do.
