Desktop icons blank and most top and bottom panel ones missing

Hi,
Using Mate 16.04.2 LTS
Mate 1.12.1
By mistake I dragged a jpg image to the top panel.
The top panel appearance changed ( a little blurred but I could see the icons). I decided to solve the issue later and started an update.
During the update a window about grub appeared and I must have done some stupid thing (do not remember what I did) because the update black panel showing the tasks being done start repeating the same tasks and same results. I forced closing the update.
After reboot the screen is now like the attached image. Most icons from top and bottom panels are gone and the desktop and dropdowm ones are blank.

I used apt-get to reinstall mate-desktop but to no avail.
To shutdown I had to open a terminal and issue 'shutdown -h now', because the shutdown button is missing.
I am not sure if my problem is due to the dragged jpg or the aborted update.
I would appreciate any help.
Regards, Geraldo

you can try this if it’s the aborted upgrade it may help.
in a terminal type the following

sudo dpkg --configure -a

if you have uninstalled downloads it will install them

To my surprise when I turned on the laptop again next morning, Mate came up normal; only system icons on top panel changed appearance (turnoff, battery, sound level and wireless).
I don’t know what happened. Perhaps the reinstall mate-desktop solved the issue.
kc1di, thanks for your tip. I will keep it for the next ‘mishap’.
