I was trying to use DaVinci Resolve and installed the AmdGpu pro driver for the OpenCL stuff. Resolve didn’t work for me so I tried to remove the AMDGpu pro stuff and now my desktop boots to no desktop just the wallpaper. Guest mode works fine.
any suggestions on what to do to fix the lack of panels and etc? I do use compiz so also possibly related. Thanks
Turned out to have been a compiz thing. I managed to “fix” it by resetting dconf and uninstalling picom but now I cannot make compiz work because there’s nothing in mate-tweak to allow me to switch again. Going to try reinstalling mate-tweak but I think it may just be time to backup and reinstall. 
I’m about 90% done reconfiguring after a re-installation. Probably not the best solution but it’s the one I know how to do quickly. So I’m closing this thread.
