Hello UM team,
Sorry about this being such short notice, life gets in the ways of fun
I have a So You Start dedicated server that I rent in OVH data center in Canada. Its unlimited bandwidth but throttled down to 250Mb. Iād like to start donating space and bandwidth to you guys as a way of saying thanks for your hard work. Can someone lead me to the right people to talk to?
Oh, I was wondering the same thing.
Iāve got a small KS-2 in one of their French datacenter that is under no kind of load whatsoever (I only use it for a small family VPN)
A new upcoming download page will feature a magnet link for the torrents. This doesnāt use a tracker or the web seeds, so thatās one way to conserve the projectās bandwidth bills.
Wimpy, not possible for you or your staff to send me those links a few hours before you go live with 16.04? Id like to get them up quick as possible so I can aleviate any bandwidth issues you have before they become a problemā¦ If your not concerned about this, please ignore my request and Iāll grab em. Iāll keep em up for at least 30 days, if traffic denotes further time, Iāll continue to hostā¦ maybe even full time for the life of the server. You guys are awesome, I canāt wait until I can donate funds towards the project.
I know in business, my job is to generate revenue, but I feel horrible generating w/o giving back to my main selling point, Ubuntu MATE desktopsā¦
Iah7, does UM team have official http ftp or even rsync mirrors for any or all iso/images? if soā¦ how does one sign themselves up and what sort of commitment are UM Admins looking for
The only downloads that eat up the project's bandwidth costs are the Raspberry Pi images. Seeding them as @Wimpy suggests is the best way to help.
All other downloads are via Canonical's infrastructure. If you are wanting to help mirror for the wider Ubuntu community, consider applying to become a mirror.
Otherwise, no, currently there isn't an official mirror that I'm aware of. Stay tuned, as @Wimpy states here:
Magnet links allow you to download via torrent purely peer to peer, without utilising trackers or web seeds () . Plus, it doesnāt cost a penny to Ubuntu MATE!
This isnāt as such ādonatingā bandwidth, but more āconservingā for the project. Speeds depend on the number of seeders and their connection speeds.
Itās about time. Now I can download UM and seed it in my sleep.
(Technically Iāve been doing this before the magnet links, itās just a lot easier with magnet links; I donāt need to save a .torrent file to use UMās torrents.)
