Enabling UART stops Ubuntu Mate from booting on Raspberry Pi 4

Hi,
I have a problem with enabling UART on Ubuntu Mate. If I add the line enable_uart=1 in the config file on a Raspberry Pi 4, Ubuntu won't boot anymore. Without this line, it works fine.
Any suggestion?
