Unfortunately, that crash of the "on screen" (virtual) keyboard (provided by the "onboard" software package) in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ("Noble Numbat") - and its flavors like Ubuntu MATE 24.04 LTS - is a known but, I believe, still unsolved bug: "Bug #2063041 “crashes immediately on pressing a key with python3.12 (Ubuntu Noble 24.04)” : Bugs : onboard package : Ubuntu" - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/onboard/+bug/2063041 - that was submitted by the user "theofficialgman ", on 21st April 2024:

Ubuntu mate 24.04 onboard keyboard crash

Fresh Install of Ubuntu mate 24.04 LTS. After starting the Onboard keyboard, the "Onboard Keyboard icon indicator" will appear in the panel indicating that the program has started and currently running. Virtual Keyboard will appear but when I move the mouse cursor over to the Virtual Keyboard or the "Onboard Keyboard icon indicator", the whole program will disappear. No error message.
