another forum asked for this but never got anything out of it. It seems like its seen in the system but I cant see it in the file system and vlc cant open the disc. Iā€™m not sure how hardware is detected but after googling it seems it should be registering under sr0,1, ect. but sg0 and sg1 are the only thing that is found, and that file cant be opened. Iā€™m using a DELL all-in-one laptop/tablet on a 24" monitor. the machine does not have an internal DVD, hence the external I purchased separately, if any of that even matters. Iā€™m not an expert but not new to Linux, but has been a few years since Iā€™ve ran Ubuntu.
anyone one got any ideas?

Welcome to Ubuntu Mate community @outlaw

I think that the problem is that kernel is loading a wrong module.

To see what kernel module is loaded on usbd devices

usb-devices

Did you plug in the device just before you ran ā€œdmesg | tailā€ or after?
This looks like itā€™s identified as an android smartphone Nexus.

I did run dmesg right after plugging in. The nexus is my cell phone plugged in for usb tethering

[code]$ udevadm monitor --property
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

cursor just flashes

Iā€™m pretty sure its not being detected for some reason. When its plugged in, the light comes on, disc spins up for about 10- 20 seconds and then it sleeps undetected.

You need to attach your external dvd writter to have some output.
You can find out more about the command in the manual

man udevadm

use the arrows to navigate, press ā€œqā€ to quit.

Disconnect the device, run the command ā€œudevadm monitor --propertyā€ and connect the dvd.
If nothing happens it could be malfunctioned.
Does it work on some other desktop pc?

It could be a number of things If the kernel doesnā€™t detect it, the faulty usb cable, underpowered usb portsā€¦
Anyway, the coffee is wearing off. Good night.

It did work when the machine had windows on it. I used it to run a live CD. ill see if i can find a different USB cable but Iā€™m pretty sure its wearing the one it came with. Thanks for your help. udevadm monitor --property isnt outputting anything after plugging the device back in. It turns on and spins up though.

Thank you Misko_2083, I had tried a couple different cables before I posted. I dug through an old networking bag I have and found an USB extension and a mini USB to USB adapterā€¦ and now its working. Just finished watching 300. Thank you for your suggestions, much appreciated.
