Failure to automount external SSD

I have an external SSD with 3 partitions:-

  1. EFI boot partition.
  2. Ext 4 partition with Linux Mint system (the EFI boots this)
  3. NTFS Partition (I have run chkdsk on this)

When I plug it into my Pi 4b the disk activity light flashes but it does not auto mount and the Pi slows right down and freezes for several seconds at a time.
I tried connecting the disk using both USB 2 and USB3 but the result is the same.
I connected an older external non SSD disk and that auto mounts fine. It is formatted NTFS and FAT.

I am using the 64bit iso and it is fully updated as of yesterday.

EDIT: I also tried using a powered hub in case it was drawing too much power.
