These wallpapers are ugly as is nearly all the ubuntu mate artwork. I think this is because ubuntu mate was incubated in linux mint with its ugly drab green and gray theme (please don’t lecture me about how “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”).
This doesn’t mean that mate is not a great distro. In fact, I am generally very happy with it. After saying goodbye to unity, I tried half a dozen different distros, finally settling on xubuntu. xubuntu is a great distro with beautiful artwork, however, its power manager and wifi network manager always caused problems for me. Also the open vpn client on it didn’t quite work satisfactorily. All these problems disappeared on ubuntu mate.
What about the drab green and gray artwork of mate? I deleted most of the wallpapers and nearly all the green icons and installed xubuntu icon theme along with themes from shimmers project. In fact I uninstalled even the horrible drab green and gray boot splash theme replacing it with the ubuntu theme.
Now ubuntu mate looks beautiful.
